Hmm, I am not much for sports but the husband has it on the Telly .. not that I pay much attention to it. Um, as for heatwaves, it’s important to stay cool. My mum used to run a cold bath … and getting cold water over your wrists will help treat heatstroke … the brain does go a bit slushy, so hydrate and get some sort of cooling system going. I heard how hot it was in the UK, and even us Aussies would have the AC turned on!

Hey Leanne! I'm not a sports person either, but World Cup has a little of my attention! I hear Australia made it through to the next round? I root for Curacao and Cape Verde and all the underdogs. Curacao is out though. Cold water on wrists and on arms is a great way to cool down and drinking lots of water and eating raw fruit and veg which naturally have water. Today is going to the worst of all days this week they say.

Oh no! This weather is crazy.

It's getting stupid now. The heat is just so intense, pretty much 24 hours a day, because our buildings and homes have mostly all been built to retain warmth, which isn't needed anymore now the climate is changing so drastically. But yes, cold water on the wrists, and elbows, is a great trick to keep cool! 😎

It's full on! I've never heard you use the word stupid! Hahahahaha! What the heat make us do. I think when you live in the big city like this one and they do what they can those planning bureaucrats to create a place full of concrete, glass and tarmac and very little trees this is what we get. Had we been under a tree in a park it would be better. Instead we're held up in boxes, be it the office, work or home and sweating it out. Not nice. I hope you're managing, I know I'm struggling with the heat my end. As for the homes, I heard on the BBC a few months ago that the housing in this country is made to retain heat.... but really? What heat? In winter the houses are cold due to lack of insulation and poor windows and in the summer, we over heat.

I was at a bus stop last week and the e-sign on the bus stop was giving off heat, as well at the signs inside the bus. It's all electric... so unneccessary. Climate change, but we need to build and produce things that don't fuel it more. That's what I say!

It's been full on this week, for sure! I hope you've been managing okay, too. They had Steve Irwin's son on TV the other day talking about it. He's used to being around high temperatures, and even he said he was struggling to walk around in it in London, because the heat has been so oppressive. Thankfully, things seem to be calming down a bit now. It's definitely being caused by our own actions, and there's so many things we're doing that are fuelling it and making it worse. It's deforestation. It's too much waste going to landfill. It's overbreeding of livestock. And the list goes on. We're just making too many mistakes, and radical changes need to be made before things get even worse... 😭😎😭

Hi everyone!

Happy Thursday to you all!

So this week, over at the 'House of Haiku', we've been talking about 'UFOs'. You can find out more about that here: https://chrisjfranklin.substack.com/p/house-of-haiku-prompt-ufo

Anyway, on to the questions... Have you been watching the World Cup? I saw the two England games so far, but that's about it. After a fantastic start, the second game didn't go quite as well, but they're safely through to the next round, so that's very positive. The hydration breaks are definitely important, and ensure everyone is staying healthy, but I guess they do interupt the flow of the game a little, and it was probably better when players just went to the side for a drink when they felt they needed to.

Who is your sports hero? That's an interesting one. I wouldn't say I have any sporting heroes as such, but I'll just go with Pelé, as he was a very inspirational figure, not only for being exceptional at his sport, but also for his charity work, and as an advocate for World Peace.

How do you manage your writing during a heatwave? It's been crazy again this week, for sure. Not far off 40C. And they say this is going to keep happening every few years from now on! I've got multiple fans running, and it's still hot. Which does make it very tricky to get much writing done. I'm just doing things in little bursts where I can. Usually, later in the evening, or at night, when things have cooled down a bit! 🥵😎🥵

OMG Pelé! Wasn't he one of the all time GOATs!

I thought the hydration break was a good idea and then I realised it's all about the commercials and money and nothing to do with welfare breaks for the players. Most devout football fans and grass roots players I've spoken to are not in favour of the hydration break as it disrupts play.

England did well with Croatia! What a great game that was. Not seen them play so well in decades. Second game not as good but could've been worse.

Fans do very little, they just move around hot air, dust and papers, for those still printing out stuff!

Keep cool and stay in the shade for now. It's amazing you manage to get some writing in this heat.

Chris J. Franklin's avatar

Absolutely! Pelé is one of the greatest players of all time. He won three World Cups. And speaking of the World Cup, England did a little better last night, and at least it was a win. There's some much harder games coming up, though, possibly against the likes of Mexico and Brazil. Maybe France or Spain, if they can get to the Semi-Finals. It's going to be tough, for sure, but it would be amazing if they could win another World Cup, exactly sixty years after the last one. And yes, there's not a lot fans can do when the heat is as intense as it has been. They took the edge off a little, but I'm looking into other solutions to get things cooled down properly, and more reliably. Especially as they're saying the heat could be coming back later in the summer! Nooooo... 🥵😎🥵

Well Good Morning,

Looks like morning SPAWN it is.

It's been quite pleasant here, 25C during the day and 15C at night. Nice breezes and windows open.

Anyway, on to the questions:

1. Watching the FIFA - We have watched bits and pieces of the games with Canada, Scotland and Norway. The next couple days will be interesting. As for the hydration breaks? Yeah, just a means to advertise, I'm afraid.

2. Sports Hero - Don't really have one, but if i had to pick, I'd probably say Wayne Gretzky. He had so many records in his time.

3. Heatwave - Keeping in the shade is he best. Close the blinds and windows, use fans and move slowly. Keeping hydrated helps too. And if you lucky, turn the AC on.

Hey Laura! How is it being one of the host countries? Do you get a sense of unity when games are spread out on so many different locations?

Wayne Gretzky is Canadian too! Another fine sportsman!

I hear the heatwave is moving towards your part of the world?!

Laura | Sunhats and Chardonnay's avatar

There definitely is a sense of unity even though most are nowhere near Toronto or Vancouver. And if they were, the cost of tickets is so high.

As for the heatwave, I'm still waiting. Still only 24 today and cloudy. maybe on the weekend it will get warmer but nothing near what Europe has right now.

Well, just for a change, it's time for a 'Morning SPAWN'! Haha... 🕺😎🕺
