Working for the DUCHESS was incredibly demanding and difficult.
HARLEQUIN kept telling herself it was JUST A JOB TO DO, and she was there for the money, THAT'S ALL, but she was too proud to quit, even though she was desperate to leave.
Most days she felt like throwing herself out of the nearest WINDOW.
On an official visit to VANCOUVER, things finally came to a head ONE DAY, while they were staying in a plush hotel.
A request was made that left her in a LAND OF CONFUSION.
She asked for clarification, but got NO REPLY AT ALL.
So she went ahead and filled one of the suites they were occupying with PIGEONS.
But there had been a MISUNDERSTANDING.
When her employer had said, "This room is for the birds", that just meant it didn't meet her high standards.
At least she was now free of the burden of it all. LIKE IT OR NOT.
Because after being forced by the hotel staff to clean up all the mess, she was immediately fired and thrown out IN THE WILDERNESS... 😎
Thanks! That's a really fun song about pigeons in Trafalgar Square. It's from the 70s, but here's a link to a modern remaster of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKVnvyDvBiw
it's late, can't hurt much more than this.... what a line! Glad you introduced some other less known to me Gray songs! Thank you! What a piece you've composed!
Oh good! I need to remember that just because the radio here doesn't play doens't mean a thing. Ok, another gig! Clearly I'm hanging out with the wrong crowd... hahahaha
What a treat this is! Steve Goodman live in Austin Limits from 1978 has some truly cool stuff. This man was ahead of his time. Just looking at his record label names: Asylum, Red Pajamas, Buddah.... shame he died so young. So so young. I am sadly not familiar with any of his stuff so thank you for yet another fab contribution.
Another great one. But I have to ask, why necessarily south for the "Banana Republics"? They could be found anywhere... :) I'm gonna listen to that Banana song now!
Probably because Jimmy Buffett made Banana Republics famous and I always think of him as being frim the Gulf Coast. Also the City of New Orleans is a train route out of Chicago heading south to NOLA.
Really inspired by the "If you could read my mind and looked up the song." I know the Johnny Cash and Gordon original version but had no idea of Gordon as an artist even though I know some of his songs. The fact that this song has been seemingly plagiarised and an influence is quite intriguing. (Greatest Love of All, Save A Prayer). So many stories behind one title.
I forgot to post my own song title poem today.
Garbage
I’m only happy when it rains
Stupid girl
I think I’m paranoid
The world is not enough
The trick is to keep breathing
When I grow up
I just want to have something to do
Girls talk
Fix me now
Nobody can win
'I'm only happy when it rains,' blast from the past with that one, perfect opener.
Hahaha thank you!
I have no idea who or what Garbage is, but I'll be looking 'em up! This is great, btw.
Thank you Jonathan! Band, American musicians, Scottish singer. Rock, good stuff! Been around for over 30 years!
I though of Garbage at first but somehow I was sure you'd choose them too :)
Mindreader! Yes, leave the mainstream to me! Hahaha!

Brilliant...revenge of the pigeons. I need to go check that song out.

DAVID GRAY
.
Labour Pains
.
Walking in circles.
Breathe… S l o w M o t i o n.
It’s late, can’t hurt much more than this.
Holding on.
Tidal wave.
Faster…sooner…NOW.
Laughing gas accumulates,
beautiful agony.
The sapling flesh,
lullaby roots of love.
What are you?
Be mine.

Cheers! 2 kids and I'm done. I just wanted to play around with Grays love songs and turn them into something else. I'm sure he wouldn't mind :)
fantastic -- reminds me I haven't listened to Gray in a while, and need to
This is great, Treasa, and the title gives it another dimension!
Thanks Fontine, there was another song title 'hospital food' that didn't get included but sparked the idea for the poem.
This year's love is very poetic. Forgotten how wonderful his music is. Why is it not on the radio? Argghhghgh
He still big in Ireland, saw him play a small intimate gig in Dublin earlier this year. He's comes across as a really nice guy too.
Oh good! I need to remember that just because the radio here doesn't play doens't mean a thing. Ok, another gig! Clearly I'm hanging out with the wrong crowd... hahahaha
All these gigs are spread out over about 30 years!!
Funny how it all comes together... You never know what the spark will be.

Terrific, Fotina. Again ... Gallon Drunk? No clue -- gonna have to be looking up!
You'd think Fotini is making up all these band names!
I am not!!! And for the letter "I" I have already chosen a band you know!
Am curious! I have my lines ready!
Me too!
INXS?
Thanks Jonathan! Please let me know what you think of Gallon Drunk, I am curious to know whether you like them or not :)
This is great, there needs to be a song of just theses lyrics.
Exactly! I need to listen to this band. Fotini throws bands at me that I am not familiar with!
I am listening to songs I had completely forgotten. It's nice digging through my old favourites. I will come back with more!!!
I hope so!
Thank you so much, Treasa!
Steve Goodman
The expats are leaving Chicago
'Riding On The City Of New Orleans'
heading south for the 'Banana Republics'
running from their 'Chicken Cordon Bleus' dreams
Some are 'Looking For Trouble'
Others just for 'Souvenirs'
Still more are looking for 'Men Who Love Women Who Love Men'
And I couldn't love her any more 'If She Were You'
'Cuz even though 'You're The Girl I Love'
'You Never Even Call Me By My Name'
So please honor 'A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request' and take me back to Chicago.
Let 'The Dutchman' rest in Wrigley's left field bleachers
Singing 'Go Cubs Go'

Get it now, it's in the lyrics...

Gord’s Gold
—
If you could read my mind
rainy day people,
if I could —
looking at the rain
the way I feel,
early morning rain
approaching lavender —
I’d do it again.
—
Sit down, young stranger.
I’m not sayin’
the first time ever I saw your face
talking in your sleep —
that same old obsession:
the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

I didn’t know about the plagiarism claim — the music not the words, I guess. There’s a bit about it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_You_Could_Read_My_Mind
Neither did I... It's very fine and not easily detectable but kudos to Mr Lightfoot!
The alliteration and the sound poetry trickles through this one! Beautiful work! So much rain.
Here's my one - posted as a note again, so I could retain the layout and stuff. :-) https://substack.com/profile/104671264-dick-whyte/note/c-55826361
