Lovely! You've definitely nailed it here with these song choices. Particularly 'Lazarus'. Because of what happened shortly afterwards, that opening line is now so haunting, and yet so beautiful, "Look up here, I'm in heaven..." 😎
Just different qualities, Gordon. I love your title choices. Patsy Cline and Gordon Lightfoot. Early Morning Rain is perfect. Walkin’ After Midnight. Can’t do better than that.
Love the complexity in this one, the positive juxtaposed with the negative. From Creep to Fix you and back to hurt. What a build up! I feel the sadness in this one and can't recover. Hello! Hurt!
It's easily done! I saw 'Heart and Bones' on one of the other ones, and thought it was the old Paul Simon song 'Hearts and Bones'. But it was a nice mistake to make, because that's a beautifully written song as well, and I hadn't heard it for a while... 😎
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. That aspect of poetry is definitely very attractive to me, when you can keep that narrative element in there. It's a different way of expressing stories, and it's a lot of fun to explore... 😎
Anais Mitchell and Charlotte Gainsbourg! I think it's the first time we see them in a song title poetry, so thank you for including them. Very heavy piece! It's only recently I discovered the Rivers of Babylon are from a psalm, otherwise well known song with Boney M! Love the end. An inscription on a tree trunk and a the bottom of the poem! Love this one Chen!
Long time no see! :) This is a very inspiring song title poem, Making me wonder what’s the opposite of invitation? Don’t come around here midnight, heartbreak and all that sadness. Beautifully written and a punchy conclusion.
Yesssss! It's back! I've been looking forward to this all week. 'Sad Songs' is a great topic, too. There's lots to work with there. I'll have a think and see what I can come up with... 😎
Jason Molina, of Songs Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company, was always my sad music back in the day. No-one quite captured it like him. Massive influence on my own music too. RIP. All the song titles are from his various bands. Here's one to start with this if ya don't know his work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gBaolYCbyE
Aw thanks Treasa - that's high praise indeed! Really appreciate it. <3 Love the description of each poem holding its own secret - very apt to Jason Molina's lyric writing :-)
Been playing Almost was good enough all morning! Heard the name but not too familiar with his music. Very poetic lyrics. Need to check out pretty eyes. Another great title.
Yeah he's amazing huh - and those songs! Great choices. Glad I used one of them haha. I first heard him a few albums into the Songs:Ohia period, and then for years he was one of the musicians I listened to on repeat, constantly. When he died it was so sad - from what we heard from the family he'd gotten clean, and went to live on a farm to get healthy, and then unfortunately his organs just packed it in, due to many years of alcoholism. So fucking sad. He was, and is, very special to me - probably more so than any musician. I still play a few of his songs when I grab the guitar - Coxcomb Red, Old Horizon, Lioness. So many great songs. Saw him live once, and it was really lovely. Him n the band were on form, and enjoying the crap out of it. Good memories.
Get well soon! Sorry to hear you’re unwell. I completely forgot to write my own song title poem for this one and didn’t submit until yesterday. We’re here for whenever you are ready.
Welcome Lique! Great to see you here. Love the contradiction between the first and last line. Maybe we don't need another love song, but we need love, right? Short and bittersweet song title poem!
Bingeol
Stormy weather
Without you
I’m going down
Let her down easy
Someone you loved
Walk on by
Only love can hurt like this
I can’t make you love me
It is dawning
Lover you should’ve come over
Never let me go
Nothing compares to you
Forget me
Song to siren
Don't Speak
Dancing on my own
Into my arms
Lazarus
Always on my mind
Strange fruit,
The Swallow’s song

What’s going on today? I’m in need of kleenex supplies!
Ah, great to be back. Thanks, Pilgrim. Here's my attempt.

Exactly!
That all fits together very nicely. Great job... 😎

Love the complexity in this one, the positive juxtaposed with the negative. From Creep to Fix you and back to hurt. What a build up! I feel the sadness in this one and can't recover. Hello! Hurt!
I’ve cried all day for my country.
I had to immediately go press play on Skinny Love. Great song title poem.
It is!
Ahh, 'Wish You Were Here'. That is such a great song, full of emotion. I was hoping to see it pop up somewhere during this Challenge... 😎
I was playing the wrong Wish you were here in my head until I read this comment… What was I thinking?
It's easily done! I saw 'Heart and Bones' on one of the other ones, and thought it was the old Paul Simon song 'Hearts and Bones'. But it was a nice mistake to make, because that's a beautifully written song as well, and I hadn't heard it for a while... 😎
I don’t know you but I know you. ❤️
Here's a quickie, in more ways than one! Haha...
SAD SONGS (Poem)
HEATHER,
THIS NIGHT HAS OPENED MY EYES.
*
WHEN THE PARTY'S OVER,
HOW DO I SAY GOODBYE.
*
MOMENTS OF PLEASURE,
CHANGE YOUR LIFE... 😎
A story told in six lines with this bittersweet poem. Thank you Chris!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. That aspect of poetry is definitely very attractive to me, when you can keep that narrative element in there. It's a different way of expressing stories, and it's a lot of fun to explore... 😎
Kate Bush in a poem is always a winner!
She and her songs are in and fit in everywhere, all the time!
Yes! It's always great to see her make an appearance in these Challenges... 😎
As soon as I saw 'sad songs', I knew that one had to be in it somewhere. Glad you enjoyed it... 😎
The Smiths—every song a sad poem! 🖤
Absolutely! You could really do a whole sad poem with just their songs!
GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA,
ASLEEP,
HALF A PERSON,
HEAVEN KNOWS I'M MISERABLE NOW,
I WANT THE ONE I CAN'T HAVE... 😎👍
These titles were made for this!
Their titles definitely fit really well for this Theme, and make it easy to go in that direction... 😎
Perfect, Chris! 🖤
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it... 😎
Good to be back First Friday poets!
.
The hearts a lonely hunter,
silent running
on melancholy hill.
Night stretches through
dusted & blue.
Heart & bones,
paper planes.
Shoot me down,
Bang, bang, you're dead.

The hearts a lonely hunter - David Byrne
Silent running - Mike + the mevhanics
On melancholy hill - Gorillaz
Night stretches through - Roisin O
Dusted &blue - Gorillaz
Heart + bones - Roisin O
Paper planes - MIA
Shoot me down - David Guetta
Bang bang your dead - Dirty pretty things
Wow! Last three lines and you knocked this whole thing out of the park! The heart's a lonely hunter indeed! Love this song title poem!
Ohhhh nice interplay of the lines! Reads really smoothly.
That's really great. There's a lot of fantastic imagery in this one... 😎
La Belle Fleur Savage—
She lit a fire
On the night we met.
Harvest Moon,
We went wild.
Where did the time go?
Love like ghosts
The birds are singing at night.
I will return again
Fool for love
The man who lives
forever!
————————
This is all Lord Huron—one of my very favorite bands. Well, and a cover of Harvest Moon. (I do like the Neil Young version better.)
Loved hearing the male perspective in this one. Beautiful build up in this one, like a short love story that's come full circle too soon.
or like the best stories--a most beautiful spiral which never really ends...
I love the male perspective. Always have. I perceive most men I've had the honor of befriending to be so very tenderhearted and sincere.
You incorporated that as a tiny detail that really has an impact on the whole poem.
Very nice! Some lovely turns here.
I do not know if his lordship but will check em out. The titles really work in this poem.
Same here, I'm still listening to Jason Molina and need to get over another threshold to incorporate more sad songs. No end.. all this hurting.
This is lovely! Well done... 😎

I read forgetting these were song titles, each poem holding it's own secret, I love this.
Aw thanks Treasa - that's high praise indeed! Really appreciate it. <3 Love the description of each poem holding its own secret - very apt to Jason Molina's lyric writing :-)
Discovered Molina years after his death. Almost Was Good Enough and Such Pretty Eyes for a Snake are constantly running on the player in my head
Been playing Almost was good enough all morning! Heard the name but not too familiar with his music. Very poetic lyrics. Need to check out pretty eyes. Another great title.
The first 3 songs on Magnolia Electric Co. (album) are great
Nice! Such good tunes. Try this one, if you're up for another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEvJ-v79O9A achingly good!
Yeah he's amazing huh - and those songs! Great choices. Glad I used one of them haha. I am sorry for showing up late and empty-handed--down with covid, mind and body not responding...

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Hope you're feeling better soon... 😎
